Did you know that what you eat and how you live directly impacts your health and how you feel? For every cell we have in our body there are 10x more bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa that are all talking to our mitochondria, coordinating repair and growth. We are only 1% human… the rest of us is an ecosystem that works harmoniously with our body if we are treating them right. Those little critters are the control center of the body, regulating hormones, inflammation, brain chemistry and what we do or don’t absorb. We know that 70% of our immune system is in the gut, where health begins. Our gut health even impacts our brain activity because more gaba and serotonin are produced in the gut than the brain. For every 1 message our brain sends to our gut, our gut sends 9. These messages include the activation of our immune system, the growth of new brain cells and the adaptability of these new cells to learn. More science is finding that our gut microbiome is critical to whether or not we experience chronic illness and impacts the health of our future. Come and learn what foods trigger inflammation and which foods to eat more of. We will learn the simple skill of fermenting vegetables like kimchi and salsa, fruit chutneys and even fermented bread which lowers the gluten content significantly.

Contact me for more info. Seating maximum for this class is 15. No refunds available after the deadline. Cost goes to food purchased for the class. A light lunch will be served and you will take home your own sourdough starter. This class will go for 2 hours.

Spiced Golden Milk

147502552_412443883388692_8633300350330639715_n

One of my favorite winter down time activities is to make a cup of warm herbal tea or spiced golden milk and cuddle up in a blanket reading a good herb or gardening book! This recipe is a little sweet and warming with all its wonderful spices. It will definitely increase circulation, warming the body and promote good digestion. You may be surprised to see black pepper in it, but it only helps to increase absorption of other herb and spices adding more benefit. I like to make a big pot to share with loved ones or reheat over a few days and sip on to warm me up. Play around with the spices to your liking. This is what I like to call hearth home medicine, using what we already have in our cupboards. You probably already have all these ingredients to make it!

Recipe

2 cups milk, (coconut, rice, almond or animal).

1-2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey

1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric

Pinch of ground cardamom

Pinch of cinnamon (optional)

Pinch of ground ginger

Pinch of ground cloves

Pinch of ground allspice

Pinch of ground black pepper

1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Warm the milk in a saucepan or pot over medium heat. Add the maple syrup and spices. Whisk in well until it begins to simmer. Add the vanilla and serve. Keep on low if serving throughout the evening, stirring occasionally or transfer to a container, keep in fridge and reheat over the next few days.

Emily’s Hiking Adventure Society!

1d2c0865-b40c-4dca-994d-9bde10d3d01d

As I thought about what I could do to still find educational opportunities without living in the Salt Lake area any longer, or having my own garden temporarily to hold herb walks, the thought of going into God’s garden more often came to mind. So I would like to start a hiking adventure society! I have planned out 10 hikes every other week May through September. We will start with the more easy to moderate hikes and work up to the longer and more intense hikes with a few smaller ones in between. Listed below are the dates and the places we will be visiting, but not in any specific order. You can sign up for one hike for $10 or you can buy the whole package and save, for $50! *Hikes are subject to change due to weather, political propaganda or any other personal reason on my end. You will notice all hikes will be held on Fridays (most starting in the morning). Dates, times and places will be emailed to you when the time gets closer after you have signed up. This opportunity will give those who come on a regular basis an opportunity to see new plants and the same plants in their different seasons. I will be keeping the group small at 8 participants. No refunds issued for missing hikes once you sign up.

Dates to plan ahead-

May 14, 28
June 11, 25
July 9, 23
August 6, 20
September 3, 17

The Hikes- (not in any particular order)

Salt Lake County –
Catherine Pass to Sunset Peak – 4 miles
Mary Martha Catherine lakes from Brighton – 6 miles
Desolation Lake – 8 miles

Updates on Bulk Food Orders and New Classes-Workshops for 2021!

Teasel 2

Hello Friends! I have had many people ask if I am still going to do my bulk food storage orders. The answer is YES! We are currently living in Spanish Fork temporarily while we build a home in Sanpete County. I will have a pick up sight location in South Jordan. It will be a one or two day opportunity since it isn’t my home, most likely on a Friday and/or Saturday. You can always pick up from me in Spanish Fork too. I will have the food storage tab updated in the next few weeks ready for orders to be placed on March 10th. Please read all instructions carefully.

I have scheduled a few classes coming up in March and April. Because we are displaced right now, I will be holding the classes in South Jordan. Visit my events page for details. The two classes scheduled for now are pruning/organic gardening and fermentation/bread making. Other workshops will be planned as the season progresses and we have a better idea of what social gatherings can look like.

I am also looking to start a hiking group where we will hike mountains in the Salt Lake and Utah County areas. I am planning the hikes to build up to bigger and more intense hikes as the season continues. I am open to suggestions as well. It should be a really good opportunity to establish a strong foundation of plant identification and build endurance! The hikes will be held most likely on Fridays or Saturdays every other week. There will be a one time fee per hike or you can pay the group fee at a discount for unlimited access. More details to come!

Rooted Emily is Moving!

Farrell house

It is with sadness and excitement that my husband and I will be moving our family in the next few weeks out into the country. Our home is for sale by owner.  We will be moving to the Sanpete county area. I hope to continue herb walks, workshops and other classes in our new area where we will have more land and access to the mountains once our new home is built. Look for updates on classes in other areas including lots of hikes this upcoming year.

If you or someone you know wants to buy my home please reach out to me through my contact page. It sits on just over a quarter acre lot.  The landscape is water wise on automatic sprinkling system. There are over 140 medicinal herbs in the garden beds, vegetable garden area, a large chicken coop and a large RV pad along the side of the house. The home is 4100 sq ft all updated with hand scraped hickory floors, some carpet and stone tile in the wet areas, butler pantry 21 x 7, sun nook off the kitchen, large workshop in the back (24 x 26) with 240 volts running to it. 5 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, lots of storage space, 2 extra rooms that can be used as a workout room and library or music room. Asking price is $668,000. Here is the link to the listing.

I will still be placing bulk food orders and taking orders for Christmas on the medicinal herb kits and body care products. We will most likely have a drop off sight for bulk orders. If you are interested in buying items for Christmas please get your orders in to me as soon as you can.  Much love! Organic Emily
